Fellow Spotlight: Ruth Wainaina:Empowering Girls

Meet Ruth Wainaina, a dedicated fellow at Mlolongo Primary School and the visionary founder of ReproHealth Network, a foundation committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health rights. Alongside Jacinta Kasyoka, Ruth leads a transformative girls’ empowerment club called Girl Up JiExpress, part of the UN Foundation’s Girl Up initiative.

The club focuses on equipping girls with essential knowledge about gender equality, leadership, and health while fostering a safe environment for open discussions and self-expression.

In honor of the International Day of the Girl Child, Ruth and Jacinta organized an impactful outreach event in collaboration with various partners and facilitators. During this event, Grades 6, 7, and 8 students engaged in critical discussions on topics such as Gender-Based Violence (GBV), menstrual health, sexual health, and mental well-being.

The facilitators provided valuable information and offered practical support by distributing sanitary pads to the girls. Additionally, they introduced a free hotline for reporting GBV cases, ensuring that the students have access to both resources and knowledge.

This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of empowering young girls and fostering

an environment where they can thrive. Together, we can create a brighter future for all children, regardless of gender.

Let’s continue to support initiatives like Girl Up JiExpress that advocate for the rights and well-being of girls everywhere.
