In a recent reflection, Vannesa Muthama, a first-year fellow at Mavoko Primary, emphasized the importance of emotional well-being in the classroom. She highlighted that a safe and nurturing environment is essential for effective learning. According to Vannesa, when students feel secure and cared for, their ability to learn and grow flourishes.
To foster this supportive atmosphere, Vannesa incorporates several vital activities that engage students and build a sense of community:
1. Dear God Jar (Mondays): Each Monday, students write down prayers, hopes, or wishes for themselves or others. This initiative encourages empathy and emotional expression, allowing students to reflect on their thoughts and support one another.
2. Gratitude Jar (Fridays):At the end of each week, students share what they are thankful for by contributing to the Gratitude Jar. This practice promotes positivity and mindfulness as they conclude their week.
3.“I Am Sorry” and “I Forgive You” Sessions: These sessions create a safe space for students to apologize and offer forgiveness, either to others or themselves. This fosters emotional healing, accountability, and empathy, contributing to a culture of respect and understanding.
4. Feelings Check:Regular feelings check-ins allow students to openly share their emotions, normalizing emotional expression and encouraging support within the classroom.
5. Celebrating Birthdays:Vannesa recognized that many students had never celebrated a birthday or didn’t even know their birth dates. By organizing birthday celebrations, she helps students feel valued and loved, boosting their self-esteem and fostering a sense of belonging.
Vannesa’s approach aligns closely with our mission, which seeks to ensure that every child has access to a quality education in a supportive environment.
By prioritizing emotional well-being and fostering a sense of community, Vannesa embodies the organization’s core values of empathy, leadership, and collaboration. Her commitment to nurturing strong relationships and promoting inclusivity in the classroom is a testament to the transformative impact that dedicated educators can have in the lives of their students.
Through these initiatives, Vannesa aims to cultivate a learning environment where students feel connected to one another and to her as their teacher.
She firmly believes that this atmosphere of safety, love, and community is crucial for both student well-being and academic success.
