In Kenya, there are numerous barriers that hold children back from realizing their full potential. They include:
• Only 2 in 5 grade 4 learners are at least meeting expectations in reading a grade 3 appropriate English text. (Source – Uwezo Annual Learning Assessment Report 2021)
• 5 in 10 learners in grade 4 meet expectations in solving grade 3 appropriate numeracy problems. - Uwezo Kenya Learning Assessment Report, 2021
2.5 million children aged 4-17 have never been to school. (MOE,2019 Education Situation Booklet).
• Children going through the Kenyan education system are losing an estimated three years of learning. When years of schooling are adjusted for quality of learning, this is only equivalent to 7.8 years, a learning gap of 2.9 years. This means Kenyan school-going children are having a learning loss of close to three years. Going to school doesn’t mean that children are learning and this is mainly because of the quality of education. (World Bank, 2019)
